Calling all harp teachers - whether you've been teaching for only 6 months or for 60 years, this event is for you

This symposium is a "roundtable" event for all harp teachers. We come together as equals to:

  • discuss relevant topics and challenges
  • share knowledge and ideas
  • developing as a teacher

Attendees also receive free entry to the Bow Brand string presentation. NB: This has been postponed.

Monday, July 1:

  • 11:00am Registration and Welcome
  • Guidelines and how symposium will work/Q&A
  • 12:30pm Begin at the Beginning: - Extended session with a break at 2:00pm
    • starting beginners who have music theory knowledge or none,
    • adult beginners vs child beginners
    • latest repertoire/books for beginners

Tuesday, July 2:

  • 9:30am Arrival
  • 10:00am - 11:30am Teacher challenges:
    • looking at non-payment,
    • difficult parents,
    • changing teachers, etc
  • 11:45am - 1:00pm Harp types, makes and models:
    • a look at what can suit different students.
    • lever vs pedal tension,
    • moving from lever to pedal
  • 1:00pm - 2:00pm Lunch break
  • 2:00pm In-depth/extended session with exhibitors:
    • follow-on from the above session
    • chance to talk and play various harps
    • explore repertoire books

Wednesday, July 3:

  • 9:30am Arrival
  • 10:00am - 12:00pm In depth/extended session on exam systems:
    • quick look at AMEB, Trinity, Con Brio, ABRSM
    • pros and cons of each system
    • which system might suit which student
  • 12:00pm - 1:00pm Lunch break
  • 1:00pm - 2:30pm Basic knowledge of harp maintenance for students:
    • what students should know
    • how to help students with tuning
  • 2:30pm - 3:00pm Break
  • 3:00pm Teaching those with special needs:
    • a look at how to accommodate for both physical and/or mental challenges
  • Group dinner (optional)

Thursday, July 4:

  • 9:30am Arrival
  • 10:00am - 12:00pm Mock Exam session:
    • two students, a lever student and a pedal student, will perform and a discussion will follow regarding how/why each person graded him
    • in-depth/extended session
  • 12:00pm - 1:00pm Lunch break
  • 1:00pm - 2:30pm Practice techniques for students:
    • ideas for those taking exams and those who don't.
  • 2:45pm - 4:00pm Harps in schools:
    • adapting ensemble music
    • suggestions and ideas for playing at school
  • End session
